Today is Super Bowl LV, which means these championship games started when I was a little girl 55 years ago. I cannot remember ever missing a single one. I watched them as a child with my single mom through all the years of raising my own kids.
Watching professional football has always been a hobby for me, starting with my home town Chicago Bears and then moving on to the San Francisco 49ers, my “new” team for the past 35 years. I recognize the flaws in both the league and in the game, but I still enjoy watching my team play and appreciate their athletic skill. It’s my guilty pleasure.
My two favorite Super Bowls were when the 49ers beat the Dolphins and when they next beat the Bengals. I had a 4 month old at the first one and then a toddler and a baby for the second. Of course I had to capture the moments. (I posed my kids next to major headlines for years; what a fun way to record history.)
My daughter once told me that she has childhood memories of waking up on Sunday mornings to the sounds of me yelling things like Run! Hit him! Faster! Go! and she would get up and join me on the couch to cheer on our team.
I was so proud! I was meeting 2 of my parenting goals: make childhood memories and pass on my love to sports to my kids. What more could I want.
Whatever you do today, I hope you are having fun with your family and make a wonderful memory.
